It's national Pet Day and everyone enjoys talking about their pets. Let me introduce you to the pets living in my house. The gray and orange cat is Naomi, a gift to our daughter on her 16th birthday. The black elegant cat, is Aria. She's my daughter's cat too, so she only lives with us when our home on college breaks. In the center, this is our dog, Faith. She is a spunky and fun pup who makes herself known whenever I attempt to record a podcast, work on my book, or blog. Our pets, are our family! They are each my favorite for different reasons. Naomi and Faith are both snugglers, keeping my feet warm when I sleep. Faith is energetic and makes sure I get my steps in daily. Aria is majestic and royalty, she's soft to pet and plays catch like a dog. Tell me about your pets and why you love them as much as you do. Today's writing assignment:

It's National Super Hero Day, so I thought it would be fun to imagine and write about having super powers. If I could have any superpower, I think it would be to travel between time zones. I'd use my super powers to go into the past to save people from harm in the future.
My Super Hero costume would change depending on the era I was in, changing automatically. The only person who would know of my super power would be the President of the United States.
When I wasn't traveling between time zones, you could find me as the librarian of the local elementary school. Some of the students might suspect I have super powers but I never agree and tell them. I keep them guessing.

:Most days of the year have a "National Day". Today is National Tell a Story Day. One of my favorite things do is write and tell stories. When I worked with third and fourth grade students, I'd do a writing activity with them.
I'd ask a few questions and then use their answers to tell an impromptu story, orally. It was so much fun. As the year progressed, I'd do this and have them be the story teller.
The more involved they were in this practice, the better the stories and details became. There were days when we printed off the brainstorm page so they could either finish the story, or write their own. I'll give you the topics, ask someone in your family to answer the questions, then tell, or write, a story using their answers as the details.

Tre' looks up to Mary and wants to be just like her when he gets older. Tre' has math homework and he needs to measure the perimeter of a triangle but the addition sentence only offers 2 + 2, he needs to figure out the rest. Mary understands she needs to ask questions so Tre' is able to solve this on his own, "What's next Tre'?". Tre' smiles and says, "Add it together." Mary nods in agreement, then asks, "But, you only have two numbers and a triangle has,..." Tre's face lights up and he shouts, "3 sides, and the sides are the same...so it's 2+2+2, so the answer is 6. Yes!" Mary and Tre' high five each other and grab their coats to go outside but once again, it's a snowy day in Detroit. The End.

Today's story is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see, but the color of the day is black. When I think of black, I think of Peter Pan. Do you know why? Today's picture is a clue. When Peter Pan enters stage, he is looking for his shadow. I enjoy shadows and have taken more pictures than most of shadows.
I take pictures of trees, flowers, and people's shadows all the time. I don't know if it is because of Peter Pan that I like shadows or maybe it's the mystery of the darkness. Within the darkness of the shadow, if you look up, are vibrant colors and much life yet the shadows hide this. Maybe it's the mystery of the shadow?
Hmm..so much to consider. Today, write a story or draw a picture that has a shadow as one of your characters. Where will you and your shadow go?

As a teacher's assistant I have the joy to accompany our class to Art, Physical Education, Library, and Music sometimes. My favorite is Art because our teacher is so talented and it sparks my creative side.

When I was in elementary school I enjoyed writing and had a vivid imagination. One of the things I enjoyed doing was to walk to the lake and watch the seagulls and ducks. They seemed so peaceful floating on top of the water. Without warning, they would take off and fly.
I would draw pictures and write stories about where I would go and what I would do if I was a bird, or one of the ducks. I liked the idea of floating all day on Lake Ontario and basking in the sun with the cool breeze. If I could have flown, I probably would have visited Canada each day to see Niagara Falls. My two little legs couldn't take me far but my imagination could take me out of this country and world.

Today's read aloud is a beautiful story. As I looked for a read aloud book about the color black I came across this boo, Black is a Rainbow Color. I hadn't heard of this book or read it before. I think this is so special and an important lesson for us all.

This is a favorite story for the teacher I work with. She sings this song so much, the kids in her class finish singing before she can. It's energetic and fun.
I chose a picture with something white and something black for today. Do you know what type of animal the white one is? Right, it's an owl. The black puppy is staring at the owl. Do you notice where the owl is standing? This silly bird is standing in the puppy's food. What do you think the puppy is thinking? What is the owl thinking? What will happen next? Will they play or will the pup chase the owl away? Maybe the owl will scare the pup? The choices are limitless, your writing prompt today, tell me about what is happening in this picture.

Today's story was one of my favorites as a child, Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss. This past Friday you learned that mixing yellow and blue together you make a new color, green. It only makes sense to have green for today's color.
Have you tried green eggs and ham before? They are delicious. They may not look very good but guess what they taste like? (do do do do do do do) Yup, they taste like eggs and ham. There is no difference in taste, the only reason they are green is because of food coloring and food coloring does not have a flavor.
The color is for fun. You could eat pink eggs if you wanted to. If you could color your eggs any color, what color would it be? If you haven't heard this story before, I hope you enjoy it. I like for orange for a few reasons but one of the most obvious is because it's our school color. I work at a school with a tiger as a mascot, so orange and black are common colors to see. Orange also reminds me of my sister, so it's a color I tend to wear and appreciate.

Hey, hey there! What is everyone up to on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon? My apologies for the late post. I spent the morning waving to kiddos at school while you picked up your laptops and i-pads.
It was so much fun. A few teachers were helping to hand out the technology and the rest of us sat in lawn chairs, at least six feet apart, and waved. I think this was the best job of the day. I attended a webinar this afternoon and learned a lot too, I look forward to sharing it with the kiddos I work with once school is back in session.
For the next few days I plan to share read aloud books about COLORS! I chose to start with purple because some of my favorite peeps like this color. Happy reading, writing, and illustrating. What color do you think will be tomorrow?

On March 16, 2020, the world changed in a matter of minutes. I arrived at school, ready to learn how to be a better teacher but our plans were changed. Instead of learning, all the teachers, and the principal, spent the day preparing learning activities and supplies to send home to our kiddos.
It was a quiet and sad day. Within a couple days, the number of cars on the road minimized. People were asked to stay inside their homes to learn, work, and play. Although the sun was shining and the flowers started to grow, the teachers and kids are inside at home.
The good news is this, soon, very soon, school will open and we will be together again. The swings are out on the playground, the snow is melting, and the teachers are more excited than the parents to take down the closed sign and open for business. If you look closely, there are people in the windows of the houses. They are all smiling. Why do you think they are smiling? It's an easy answer, they smile because learning at home is only temporary and we will be together again, soon. The flag is up on my mailbox because I received a letter from L.B. and I can't wait to read it.

I assist in a Kindergarten class room and when we ask the kids to write a story in September, it is all pictures. Remember, your teachers strive to make learning fun. We also incorporate brain breaks and moments of "down time" so you don't get too tired. This is one of my favorite channels, the "Cosmic Kids Zen Den".
When you feel like you are tired of doing school work, take a moment to relax your body and brain. If you fall asleep, this is okay. Your parents won't mind if you take a power nap, it's all good.

Are you ready to watch one of Mrs. Buske's favorite childhood shows? A long, long, long, time ago there was a show called, "Reading Rainbow". LaVar Burton was the host and I thought he was so cool.
This show not only will read a story aloud to you (which you know I enjoy), Mr. Burton shares different facts that relate to the book. Sometimes you might learn more about the author, the location, or even the subject. Books are a doorway to your next adventure of learning.

This show not only will read a story aloud to you (which you know I enjoy), Mr. Burton shares different facts that relate to the book. Sometimes you might learn more about the author, the location, or even the subject. Books are a doorway to your next adventure of learning.

School has changed over the years in a lot of ways, the one I miss the most is the read aloud. I enjoyed listening to my teachers read to us, whether it was in elementary school or high school. We didn't always have to write afterwards but when we did, I enjoyed it. This was an opportunity for me to share how I viewed the story, how it made me feel, or to convey the message I thought the author was trying to get across.
Today's story is "Stick and Stone" by Beth Ferry. I found of video of the author reading the book to you. You might think it's a simple book or babyish, but, as you listen to the author read.
Think about how you would answer these questions:
1) Who are the characters in the story?
2) What is the problem in the story?
3) How did they solve the problem?
4) Have you ever felt like one of the characters in the story?

Today's writing lesson is important and you don't need a pencil or pen. The only thing you need for this lesson is an open mind and the courage to dance. In life you will have a lot of jobs to do and in order to do them well, you need to take time for yourself. If you are familiar with the Leader In Me, then you know it as "sharpening the saw".
Have you heard the phrase "Hump Day"? Adults say this because it's the middle of the week and it encourages them to keep going. We are all on a new journey in life so we need to take time to brighten our days and sharpen our saws. So today, we dance!
This is one of my favorite "brain breaks" to do. A dear friend shared it with me early in my teaching career and each time I do it, I think of her. Her laughter and love of live was contagious and she introduced her students to this song each year. Today, as our mid-week, hump day, brain break...we are going to move our bodies with Toe-Knee-Chestnut. Stand up, make sure you have some room to move, and hit the play button on the video below.
